We have an out-of-warranty EqualLogic PS5500 which reported a drive failure. The array is configured in RAID 50, with 2 hotspares. We replaced the drive with the same model (used), and on replacement we got the error "The drive failed to spin up after 30 seconds". No big deal, we're bound to get a dud now and then. We order another drive, swap it in and get the error "The drive failed to spin up after 30 seconds." We were able to connect both drives to a desktop and were able to get the drives to spin up. Given the lack of paid support on the array, what can I do to isolate whether the problem is with the drives, the small board on the drive caddy, or the board that the drives connect to, and what can I do to fix any of these problems?
